Road March – A Four-Person Team from Trineria Took On the March

2 min

A four-person crew from Trineria set out to find out what their bodies were actually made of. The target: road march – 50 kilometers of road and varied trails, with at least 10 kilos in the pack.

How did it go?

The march kicked off on Saturday morning at 6:00 AM. The conditions were classic late Finnish spring: a chilly +2 °C and rain. The performance itself went briskly, and a steady pace put us in a position where we were actually climbing the standings after the halfway mark. At its fastest, our tempo hit 10:17 min/km.

We didn't quite escape mishaps, though – one team member unfortunately had to be evacuated at the 30 km mark after a knee announced its unwillingness to continue. At 42 km, on an uphill stretch, the strain started to show more broadly. Our pace on the climb first dropped to 12 minutes per kilometer, then to roughly 13. Even so, compared to the all marchers we held our speed well and grit got us to the end.

And so the remaining three crossed the finish line! Soles, ankles, and knees took a beating along the way, but we made it on our own feet. The total march time, breaks included, was 10 hours and 45 minutes and we placed 7th out of 13 teams.

And what was the worst part of the whole thing? The moment the march ended and you sat in a car for hours – and then tried to get moving again afterward. The legs did not appreciate that decision after such a long day on foot.

The mood after march day

The legs are still talking, but the effort already brings a smile. The adventure was worth it, and at the following Monday's team meeting we even had folks eager to do it all over again! Our outdoorsman/software developer Antti is even setting his sights on a 100-kilometer walk this coming August.
